4 Tips for Stripping Old Paintwork During a Renovation Project

Stripping old paintwork from the walls at home isn’t for the faint of heart. It may have multiple layers over the top of it with various flaky bits hidden beneath that contributes to an uneven finish. Stripping off the paintwork to reveal the original edges and moldings is best, especially with older buildings. Doing so and then painting the wall will deliver the smoothest finish.

Here are 4 tips for stripping old paintwork in a renovation.

  1. Be Careful of Lead Paint

Some older paints include lead in their composition. Trying to remove them can lead to exposure to lead that’s not good for your health.

If the paintwork in your home is found to have lead in its composition, then you need to be wary. Protecting yourself by wearing an adequate face mask is the first step.

Lead paint is just as dangerous to contractors that work on your home, so if you suspect lead paint might be present, make sure the contractor you hire has completed ZOTA Professional Training.

If you choose to take the task on yourself, protect yourself from harmful dust by hiring an industrial vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter for the clean-up.

  1. Effectiveness Varies with Chemical Strippers

A chemical stripper can be used to strip the paint back. Older paint strippers were not hugely effective on their own and required a considerable amount of it to get the job done right. Modern paint strippers are available in paste form and are very effective as well as less messy.

What’s most critical with chemical strippers is to avoid the general ones. They work the least well because they’re not specific to the type of paint being removed. Instead, look for strippers specifically for solvent-based, varnish-based, or water-based paints. These types of products will be far more successful than an “all-purpose” paint remover product.

  1. Scraping Off Paint? Get the Elbow Grease Out!

While scraping old paint off a wall is a popular choice, it will surely give your biceps a workout. Pretty soon, your arms will be screaming for a rest. So, it’ll be necessary to take breaks to not burn your arms out completely.

For the tough areas, you may need fine-grit sandpaper added to an oscillating tool to resolve the paint.

Also, use a large drop cloth covering the floor and any nearby furniture that you haven’t already moved out of the way. This should catch the old paint peelings and chips as they fly in every which direction.

  1. Heat Guns for Paint Removal Are Slow Going

Using a heat gun to remove old paintwork is a heavy-hitting style, albeit a slow one.

You can hire someone to do it for you, but they’ll cost a fortune because of how long it will take.

Surprisingly, there is more than one way to strip paint off a wall (don’t even get us started about painted doors). It’s a case of using the right tool for the job here, otherwise, the results will be uneven.
